La Française des Jeux starts internet gaming for cash

Dublin, Ireland
June 5th, 2001:

The French national lottery, La Française des Jeux (LFDJ), the world’s 5th largest lottery with an annual turnover in excess of $5bn, has started live cash internet gaming.  Following a test period of several weeks with a restricted user base, LFDJ have opened their site (www.fdjeux.net) to all residents of France and French overseas territories. LFDJ are offering three instant games in the first phase of the project:

  • Abracadabra, an exciting and richly animated game with a “magic” touch
  • XIII  (”Thirteen”), a multi-stage game based on a popular French comic strip
  • C’est tout Foot, an animated penalty shoot-out game
These games, all running on the Access gaming platform, were acquired from three different sources: Next Generation Gaming (an Access games development partner), Naji (an Access games development subsidiary), and finally, from an existing Access live customer. This free sourcing of games is a demonstration of the power and flexibility of the Access Open Content Strategy whereby operators can source their games content where they wish using the Access Games Development Kit (GDK). LFDJ are planning to introduce several additional games in this way by the end of 2001.

The Access interactive gaming system will also connect to new distribution media offering players access to traditional and new games, making the system a truly all-encompassing gaming solution.

The Access interactive gaming system provides LFDJ with an extremely secure, scalable, robust and high performance transaction processing architecture for interactive gaming via the internet, interactive television and wireless networks. According to Paul Barnes, Vice President of Sales & Marketing, “Access is very proud of our association with LFDJ who have shown great innovation throughout this project, and are proving to be true leaders in the interactive gaming arena. We look forward to assisting them in the implementation of their strategy for interactive gaming”.

Access' interactive gaming system was the first internet gaming system in the world to be certified by a government gaming authority in a fully regulated jurisdiction (The Northern Territory Racing and Gaming Authority, Australia).  The Access interactive gaming system has been licensed to major gaming operators in Australia, Austria, Germany, Holland and the United Kingdom. Access has more than 110 staff developing, supplying and servicing the on-line gaming industry.
