Man shot dead after Treasury casino seige

  Australian police shot dead a gunman who had taken two hostages and demanded A$500,000 from staff at the Treasury casino in Brisbane. The incident began at around 7pm on the 29th with the fatal shooting almost four hours later after the casino had been evacuated.

    The planned Internet gaming legislation from the Tasmanian State Government that is expected to get the royal assent on December 22 has not been received well in Australia. The Howard Government in the wake of the Productivity Commission report is threatening a clampdown on Internet gambling.
    The potential veto from the Federal Government in Canberra could be costly to the State. According to the planned legislation the cost of applying for a license would be A$30,000 whether approved or not. Once operating, a levy of A$1 million every year would be due plus a cut of the profits based on turnover.

    The Australian Pokie, estimated to number fifth of the world's video poker machine population is the focus of Federal Goverment plans to combat growing gambling addiction problems.
    According to a Government green paper, plans for increasing numbers will be scrapped and machines will be limited to pubs, clubs and casinos. The Governments Productivity Commission report released last summer detailed that Australia has an estimated 330,000 problem gamblers.

    Queensland's Jupiters Ltd has announced that it will be spending A$150 million remodelling its Conrad Jupiters casino and hotel. The announcement follows Jupiters A$143.5 million bid for gaming equipment manufacturer AWA Ltd in October.

  With the recent takover of Melbourne's Crown casino by Kerry Packer's family controlled Publishing and Broadcasting, James Packer, Kerry's son will be taking over the helm at the casino complex.
    Lloyd Williams the former Crown chief has resigned after being involved in tabling the original bid as well as designing the A$2 billion property. Sydney's Star City also the subject of a takeover from Tabcorp means that Australias two biggest casinos will both have new owners entering the new millennium.

  Mikohn Gaming Corporation has announced that it has been awarded a contract from TAB Ltd, Sydney to install a wide area progressive slot system in New South Wales. Mikohn will also supply the signage and electrical displays for the system expected to be operational by April 2000.
    As part of the deal, TAB will acquire a 50 percent equity interest in Mikohn's Australian subsidiary, Mikohn Gaming Australasia Pty. Limited. TAB  is best known for its totalisator and betting agency operations throughout New South Wales.The company also has an exclusive license to monitor 95,000 slot machines at 3,000 venues in New South Wales
