There
are no official casinos in the Irish Republic. Private members clubs however
are exploiting a loophole in the law to offer gambling. The Gaming and
Lotteries Act of 1956 allows gaming in private members clubs and fellow
members are presently acting as the bank. A practice that was common place
in British casinos prior to and also after the 1968 Gaming Act.
Although the operations are on a quite small scale there has been recent
press coverage over plans to site a casino at the Curragh racetrack on
the outskirts of Dublin.
