Britains Bookmakers are threatening to swamp offshore islands in their haste to set up and maintain their share of the £1 billion telephone betting market.

Victor Chandler picked up 5,500 new clients in 2 months after moving to Gibraltar and offering only 3% tax, instead of the 9% currently being extracted from the British punter when he/she bets or picks up winnings. Chandler was quickly taken over by ENIC a group that controls a number of European soccer clubs.
Plans are also afoot for the 59 British racecourses to offer interactive betting through their own website and offer 5% tax that will then be ploughed back into racing.

Whatever happens to the Bookmaking scene all we can say is that more choice for the player is never a bad thing. Moving offshore as one company has been quoted as saying takes "only a matter of hours". To make a level playing field and preserve jobs the Government needs to reduce betting Tax at the first opportunity.
